The Crisis and Capitalism: from Marx to the “Smart Guys” on Wall Street

Share

The recent crisis brought a new trend in economic and political debates, one according to which it is “cool” to be anti-, anti-market, anti-capitalism, anti-economy. Some kind of paradox of modernity, meaning a popular form of anti-system revolt, although if we take into consideration the "Occupy Wall Street" phenomenon, even only as a simple illustration, it is easy to understand how far from their target are the anti-capitalism militants. We are witnessing, in fact, a radical denial of capitalism, frequently in the absence of its intellectual deciphering, through an entire set of myths and errors: from the capitalism that creates poverty and inequality, wars and pollution, to the capitalism that leads to moral degradation and economic crises. In fact, this is how Marxist prophecies looked like – the ones invoking the collapse of free market that was going to be slain by the burden of economic cycles, once “the masses” will rebel under the weight of more and more severe recessions.
