What We Did Not Understand from Recession: Time Matters!

Share

During all these years (seems like forever), the recession was described as being a catastrophe, almost like the war. A scourge of the economy that becomes ruinous, especially for the contemporary civilization. However, to clarify this, the recession is not the cause, but only the effect. The recession does not reflect anything else but previous deviations of the economy from its healthy, normal, growth rate. Many economists were ecstatic almost everywhere when the economy was rising at a fast pace, financial markets were strongly growing and real estate investment seemed heavenly, almost in contradiction with rarity laws. Therefore, the recession’s causes can be found at the level of the policies that invaded the market with artificial capital, fictive credit promoted by central banks through interest rates close to zero or even negative in real terms. We can remember, for instance, the famous credits that could be contracted only with the identity card. Or the wave of mortgage loans that have set in motion entire industries, even national economies. Or the USA’s case, where the banking system recklessly expanded credits towards broader categories of borrowers, with government-backed mortgage schemes under the political slogan “A house for every American”. Of course, created for those who couldn’t afford a house otherwise, exactly how they couldn’t afford afterwards to pay back their loan.
